Outstanding Young Person of Sabah 2007 award
The Junior Chamber International Kota Kinabalu
named Roger "The Outstanding Young Person of Sabah" (TOYPS) for the
Cultural & Artistic Achievement category at a grand gala dinner on
September 9, 2007.
TOYPS is a prestigious award organised by the
JCI to recognise young Sabahan and Malaysian individuals in Sabah who
have dedicated themselves to the progress or welfare of the community
at large. These individuals have excelled in their field of profession,
practice and endeavour and while some are known by the public, others
have worked in obscurity making them unsung heroes of their field.
Other
winners of the award nclude Raymond Chan (Business, Economic or
Entrepreneurial Accomplishment), Josephine Wan-Wen Hadikusumo
(Contribution to children, world peace, nature or human rights), Adrian
Lasimbang (Humanitarian and Voluntary Services) and Alex Lim Keng Liat
(Personal Improvement and Accomplishment).
In accepting his
award that night, Roger said that the award meant a lot to him because
it represented recognition and approval from his home state. He rallied
for more support young musicians in the state and encouraged
musically-inclined youths to fully explore their talent.

Kota Kinabalu Jazz Festival 2007
It was a spectacular event, a successful festival, a magical evening for both audience and performers.
The
first-ever Kota Kinabalu Jazz Festival attracted 1,500 people,
entertaining them non-stop from 6pm to midnight. More than 20
international, national and local musicians performrf at the Charity
Concert on August 11 at the historical Jesselton Point overlooking the
idyllic South China Sea.
The
five performing groups were Denise Mininfield (USA), Son2nos
(Venezuela), Farid Ali (KL), Double Take (Sabah's very own solo
fingerstyle guitarist Roger Wang and vocalist, Mia Palencia) and
Jazzelton Quintet (comprising June Tan on piano, Professor Hanafie Mohd
Imam playing bass, Mohd Nizam Attan playing the violin, Jacek Adam
Rubczak on saxophone and Mohd Shaun Yazeed on drums).
The inaugural Kota Kinabalu Jazz Festival was jointly organised by the Rotary
Club of Kota Kinabalu, Society for Performing Arts Kota Kinabalu Sabah (SPArKS),
Suria Group and Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK))
Organising Chairman Frankie K.O. Fu from the
Rotary Club of Kota Kinabalu said the club has earmarked a number of community
projects such as gravity feed water supply in Kota Marudu and Ranau, donations
to poor schools in rural areas, and continuation of the Avoidable Blindness
Programme.
Earlier
in the day, two workshops were conducted by master musicians for
enthusiastic members of the public at The Rock School, Likas Sports
Complex Golf Driving Range. Lessons on drum and bass were held by
drummer John Thomas and Professor Hanafie Mohd Imam while Farid Ali and
Roger conducted the workshop on guitar and gambus.

Johor Bahru Arts Festival 2007
Roger and Mia Palencia made their way down to Johor on July 13th for the 4th Johor Bahru Arts Festival.
Joining
other renowned musicians like the Choir of Trinity College (Australia),
Herman Li of Dragon Force (UK) and MP3rio - just to name a few - Double
Take returned to perform to a sellout crowd at the southern state.

Equatorial Hotel's 3rd Summer Jazz Series
After
having sell-out shows in the previous two years, the enigmatic duo
Double Take retuned to Equatorial Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, for the Summer
Jazz Series from happening from June 27 to 30, this time with two music
workshops to educate and inspire.
On June 28, Roger conducted his workshop, An
Introduction To Fingerstyle Guitar. This workshop is aimed at
beginners with a desire to learn and gain appreciation to this art.
Renowned local guitarist Jamie Wilson joined the duo on the last day, ending the annual event with an unforgettable performance.

Kota Kinabalu City Day celebrations
Kota Kinabalu
celebrated its 7th City Day on February 1, 2007 with a colourful parade of floats and a
live concert featuring local artistes, including Roger Wang, at the Promenade
Boulevard, Kota Kinabalu, witnessed by the Head of State and local government ministers.
Joining the festivities were international cultural groups from
Australia, South Africa, Philippines, China and Korea. Hoards of
spectators packed the street to witness breath-taking fireworks display
at midnight.
The
event is organised by the Kota Kinabalu City Hall. For more

"Visit Malaysia Year 2007" Launch
Tourism Malaysia
organised a truly elaborate affair to launch VMY 2007 at Taman Tasik
Titiwangsa, Selangor, on January 6, 2007. Included amongst its extensive list
of local celebrities performing that night were Roger Wang and Farid Ali.
The
Prime Minister of Malaysia, YAB Dato' Seri Abdullah Haji Ahmad
Badawi officially launched the Visit Malaysia Year (VMY) 2007 at 8pm
during the grand ceremony. The highlights of the event were a concert
featuring
renowned Malaysian artistes, an exciting fireworks display and the
unveiling of the "Eye on Malaysia", a 60-metre high ferris wheel
similar to the "London Eye".
