GEAR
Roger has more equipment than what is shown here, but these are the ones he uses
for performances and recordings.
Maton EBG808 Artist
 |
"I got this guitar after meeting Tommy Emmanuel in April 2000. I tried his Maton
and was amazed with the sound he could get out of it, especially when it came
through the PA. I ordered it directly from Maton in Australia. Waited a month
for it. The Maton piezo pickup are the best I've tried. The APmic system
installed on the EBG808 Artist gives the option of mixing in the sound of a
small microphone installed inside the guitar near the sound hole. This adds a
kind of warmth that is missing from the piezo pickup. It was around this time
that I started playing with the thumbpick and studied other forms of acoustic
fingerstyle playing. The acoustic flat top seems to suit this new style better. I
had to switch between the Yamaha arctop and this Maton acoustic during gigs.
Eventually I learnt to combine these two styles and the Maton became my main guitar
from that point onwards." - RW

"I have gotten so dependent on the sound and feel of the Maton
that I realised that I needed to get another one as a backup. This one sounds a
lot brighter and louder than the EBG808. Plus the cutaway comes in very handy
for those high notes." - RW

Yamaha AEX1500
 |
"This is my first Jazz box. I got it when I was just getting
into fingerstyle jazz and needed an arch top guitar to go with it. Could not
afford a Gibson L5, so the AEX1500 was the next best thing. I ordered it
straight off the catalogue and waited 6 months! It became my main guitar for the
next 5 years. You can hear it on Double Take's debut album. I used it a lot on
that album. Love the feel of the neck and the piezo/humbucker combination. I
replaced the original humbucker with a Bartolini 5J in July 2001. These pickups
are really hard to find. I have been searching for it ever since I got the
guitar. Finally found it in a little music shop in Manhattan! " - RW

"I bought this guitar second hand in May 2002. I am not a classical guitarist,
but I love the sound of a good nylon string guitar. There is a kind of warmth
and intimacy in its sound that can not be found on a steel string guitar. You
can hear it used for rhythm on the bossa tracks." - RW |

Jeffrey Yong Handmade Guitar
 |
"This
guitar was built by Malaysia's very own guitar luthier, Jeffrey Yong. I
have been very impressed with his work and proud to see quality guitars
being made by a fellow Malaysian. I told Jeffrey I wanted a small
guitar with a big acoustic sound. And this is excactly what this guitar
delivers. Its parlour shape is a combination of solid European spurce
top and Malaysian blackwood backs and sides. The neck is a five-piece
ply consisting of nyatoh, ebony and snakeskin. Wood choice for the
fretboard is ebony. For maximum sustain, the strings are held down by
Jeffrey's own GIM Tone Enhancer solid brass bridge pin.
Keep up the good wok Jeffrey!!" - RW |
